Review - AVG Anti-virus 8.0

What’s it about?

AVG Anti-Virus 8.0 is a very effective virus protection suite at very competitive prices. AVG’s software has been known to be extremely reliable for picking up all forms of viruses and 8.0 is o different. As they have done with all their previous versions of AVG, they also provide a free version for home users which is just as effective in its protection as the paid versions.

Pros

AVG have kept up their high standards of protection with version 8.0 and have now perfected the only element which has held them back for years – user friendliness. AVG Anti-virus 8.0 has a far more attractive user interface and all features are relatively easy to find. However, should you have any problems using the software, AVG have posted very useful PowerPoint presentations on using most features.
AVG have slowly been integrating into the South African market, and have been doing a good job of it. This is particularly useful since it allows South African users to make use of the free support that AVG offers on its paid versions.

Cons

Virus scans are run at pre-determined times, and if you are running a relatively slow computer and you attempt to work on your machine whilst AVG is scanning for viruses, you get a substantially degraded performance. This can be avoided most of the time by setting scans to run when you are rarely behind your computer, but it is bound to happen on occasion.
AVG do not make it particularly easy to download their free version, in fact there is no link to it at all on their website. One has to know to go to http://free.grisoft.com to download the free version. Don’t be fooled into thinking that a trial version is the free version.

Final Thought

AVG is nowhere near as big as other virus protection programs (such as Nortons) and that is a sad fact, however they have been slowly gaining a significant market share and AVG 8.0 has contributed significantly towards this. AVG Anti-virus 8.0 is amongst the best one can get and is definitely recommended by EZ Computers.
